The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॥

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam,
Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat

The Meaning
“We worship the three-eyed Lord Shiva, who nourishes and nurtures all beings. May He free us from the bonds of death, as easily as a ripe cucumber falls from its vine, and lead us toward immortality.”

The Significance
This is the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra — the great death-conquering verse, chanted for protection, healing, and release from fear. It holds special power at Pashupatinath, “Lord of All Beings,” the sacred Jyotirlinga on the banks of the Bagmati where our Nepal Dham Yatra pays homage to Shiva himself.

How to Chant

  • Sit facing east in a calm, steady posture.
  • Chant the verse 11 or 108 times, ideally at sunrise.
  • Visualize Shiva’s third eye radiating protective light.
  • Offer gratitude for safety and renewal before you travel.

The Blessing
“Where the Mahamrityunjaya is chanted, fear dissolves and life is renewed.”
