The Narasimha Mantra

॥ Ugram Viram Maha-Vishnum
Jvalantam Sarvato Mukham
Nrisimham Bhishanam Bhadram
Mrityur-Mrityum Namamyaham ॥

The Meaning

I bow to Lord Narasimha — fierce yet heroic, the Great Vishnu Himself; blazing with radiance, His presence felt in every direction; terrifying to evil yet supremely auspicious to the devoted; the very death of death, who conquers all fear.

The Significance

This is among the most powerful protective mantras in the Vaishnav tradition. Lord Narasimha — the half-lion, half-man avatar of Lord Vishnu — is the remover of obstacles, the destroyer of negativity, and the fierce protector of His devotees. To chant this mantra is to invite courage, dissolve fear, and place oneself under divine shelter. It is especially revered for removing unseen obstacles and inviting auspiciousness into the home.

How to Chant

  • Sit quietly before a lamp or image of the Lord.
  • Take a slow, deep breath and steady the mind.
  • Chant the mantra 11 or 108 times with devotion.
  • Chanting is considered especially potent on Ekadasi and other sacred days.

The Legend

Lord Narasimha appeared to protect His young devotee Prahlad from the tyranny of his demon-king father, Hiranyakashipu — emerging neither as man nor beast, neither by day nor night, neither inside nor outside, to honour a divine boon and uphold dharma. His appearance is the eternal reminder that the divine will always protect the faithful, however dark the hour.

“When fear surrounds us, His name is our shelter. Where obstacles rise, His grace clears the way.” 🙏
