॥ Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi
Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat ॥
The Meaning
We meditate upon the divine light of the Sun — the source of all creation. May that radiant, supreme intelligence illuminate our minds and guide our understanding toward truth.
The Significance
The Gayatri Mantra is revered as the mother of all mantras — Vedmata. It is a prayer not for any single desire, but for clarity of thought and the awakening of wisdom. Where many mantras seek protection or grace, the Gayatri seeks light: the inner light by which we see ourselves and the world rightly. To chant it is to ask the divine to guide the very mind that chants.
How to Chant
- Sit quietly in the early morning, facing the rising sun if possible.
- Take a slow, deep breath and settle the mind.
- Chant the mantra 3, 11, or 108 times with full attention.
- Sunrise (Brahma Muhurta) and sunset are considered the most auspicious times.
The Legend
The Gayatri Mantra appears in the Rig Veda, revealed to the sage Vishwamitra after years of profound penance. It is said that this single verse holds the essence of all the Vedas. For generations it has been chanted at dawn across India and beyond — a thread of light passed from teacher to student, age to age.
“Before we ask the divine for anything, we ask only this: clarity to see, and wisdom to walk the path.” 🙏
